“Come one, Come all, Step right up!”
Part One – The Wagon
The cacophony of sound drew closer as Doctor Levingstone’s wagon shook guts down the stagecoach roads, clanking glass bottles of “snake oil” medicines… “Come one, come all, step right up folks!” Another town is graced by the presence of the Rockefeller wagon of poisons, ready to be shook down by this flim flam man.
Such humble beginnings of a huckster and womanizer, this family brought over from old Europe, the Rockenfeller name, albeit changing its spelling. The patriarch, William, was known by the sobriquet devil bill, and took the name of a local academy in Richford, New York, where his son John Davison Rockefeller would be born, as his last name, when hocking his patent medicines to the unsuspecting and naive.
This author shall thenceforth refer to him as Devil Pill Rockefeller, who had the grand vision: Create your own product from snake oil, invent your own institute and title, certify and license your product with your institute. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Part Two – Standard Rock Oil
Playing husabnd and father to two broods in the New York State and a third in Canada, Dr. Bill Levingstone enjoyed a lucrative swindle and hustle around Lake Erie, assuming this new alter ego, after William Avery Sr. was indicted for raping a young girl just prior to 1850. He would go on to refine several alter egos, sometimes a deaf and dumb mute writing on a small chalkboard, other times an eloquent Botanic Physician. His silent act led to him wooing and marrying John D’s baby mama.
Dr. Levingstone’s enduring standard, “Rock Oil”, was the miraculous medicine and cure of this self proclaimed “cancer expert”, being merely a crude mixture of colon cleanse and unrefined crude. All the tricks of the flim-flam trade were ingrained into the young John Davison Rockefeller, Sr., as he became a master in the arts of bullshitting, swindling, and making a clean getaway. Lying, cheating, and stealing that would make former CIA director, Mike Pompeo blush with envy. As devil pill gloated so very often, “I cheat my boys every chance I get. I want to make ’em sharp.” That, he did, and then some.
